With the news media being a 24/7 source of information, and with technology providing mobile communication from almost anywhere, it's no wonder that issues and causes are promoted through social media. This, for example, makes response time much faster for people to take action in support of a Congressional vote, or to see results from petitions in support for someone who may have unfairly lost their job, etc. The applications of this form of promotion are endless. This ease of communication also comes closer to home, of course. For instance, my husband had to go out of town and we needed to proceed with selecting new flooring for the renovation of our house. I had scheduled an in-home sale visit from Empire Today and since my husband couldn't be with me to peruse the available selections, I posted photos and information-that only he could see-on Facebook and then we text messaged about what we thought. This made it possible for us to zero in on a sample of carpet, for instance, that we both liked. With our means of communication, we were able to make a decision without him being there with me and the Empire Today representative. Now that he's home and really likes the carpet that was installed, we have proof of the efficiency and viability of such means of communication!

Easy access to personal information on social networking sites is bringing criminals out in droves to take advantage. One Cheyenne, Indiana police officer decided to start his own business and use his internet savvy to fight back. He uses various fake profiles on every social networking site to track and catch criminals.
He uses the profiles to search for criminals and track down their movements based on what they are saying to their friends or family members on the sites. He said that the lack of security settings on people's social networking profiles is astounding. He has come across countless examples of questionable photos and information about illegal activity that have been posted on personal profiles. But even for those who attempt to lock up their profiles, there are always ways for someone to get around it. Every friend that you have on a social networking site is a hole into your profile.
